Miniature Donkeys

Miniature donkeys are native to the Mediterranean Islands of Sicily and Sardinia.  These donkeys come in a variation of colours, the most prevalent colour for Miniature Donkeys is grey which consists of a grey coloured body, with a dark colour dorsal stripe down the back and over the shoulders.

Donkeys are herd animals and one lone donkey is a very lonely donkey.  Because of their laid-back, easy going personalities, they make wonderful pets for children, the handicapped and the elderly.  It is not recommended that you buy an un-gelded adult jack as a pet.  Even though the donkey's nature is to be much less nervous and tense than an un-gelded horse, you cannot remove his basic instincts.
Donkeys do not usually mind the cold, but they hate the rain. A wet donkey is susceptible to pneumonia and bronchitis when chilled.  A shed, open on one side and well bedded with dry straw will do for a shelter.  They can survive on good quality hay alone, pure grass hay being the best choice for donkeys as alfalfa is too rich a feed for them.  Very lush grass is not good for donkeys as they cannot cope with the digestion of too much rich protein. Iodized, trace mineral salt, either in blocks or loose, should be provided at all times.

Note: Never feed cattle food to donkeys. It is too high in added protein and too much protein may result in terrible skin trouble or even death.

Never feed concentrates containing rumensin - this is fatal to all donkeys.
Our Donkeys

Our farm consists of Eight miniature donkeys, Caleb, Mocha, Tesco, Calais, Sarum, Kola, Nacho and Pedro. We use our donkeys as guard donkeys for our cattle and goats. We live in heavy bush and have many bears, coyotes, and wolfs living nearby, but have never had any problems with animals being attacked.  As donkeys eat the same feed as the cattle and goats, they do not require any special care.
